Walmart Launches Contest to Sell Customer Products

Walmart launched a contest in the US that gives customers the chance to have their products sold in the retailer's stores and on its website. The "Get on the Shelf" contest was opened to the public via a Twitter announcement from @WalmartLabs on Jan. 18 and will run through Feb. 22.

"Walmart has the best products at everyday low prices, but we know there are some great undiscovered products that have not yet reached our shelves," says Venky Harinarayan, SVP of Walmart global e-commerce and co-head of @WalmartLabs. "For a long time, the ability to get a product into a retail store was at the sole discretion of the store buyer. Today, we are removing these barriers by giving anyone a chance to launch their product at Walmart and reach millions of shoppers nationwide."

Items from any category currently covered by Walmart are eligible to enter the competition. To participate, contestants are asked to create and upload videos of their latest inventions. At press time, Walmart has said that there have already been almost 60 entries.

The top three winners will be picked by the public in an online vote at www.getontheshelf.com.
