7-Eleven Spends $1M to Prevent Underage Sales
7-Eleven has deployed a $1 million upgrade the checkouts across all 1,600 stores in California. The retailer aims to prevent sales of age-restricted products to underage customers and has partnered with the California Office of Traffic Safety for the program.
With the new technology, the retailer can now scan the two-dimensional code on the back of a customer's driver's license or identification card to verify the birth date stored on the card as well as the validity of the ID. The retailer will not hold any other information about the customer. If the installation is successful, it will be rolled out nationwide by mid-May.
