Bottom 10 Retail Companies to Work For
Last week, RIS News
brought you the top 10 retailers to work for based on the Good Company Retail Index
in which 52 of the nation's biggest retailers are ranked by how they treat employees, customers and the planet. This week we present the retailers that didn't quite make the grade — ranking 42 to 52 — or the bottom 10 retailers to work for.
Industry experts Laurie Bassi, Ed Frauenheim and Dan McMurrer researched the 52 retailers to see where they rank among Americans who are more globally conscious and civic-minded in today's post-recession environment. Each company was assessed on three measurements: its rating on Glassdoor.com, a website that collects feedback from employees at thousands of companies; its score from wRatings, a research firm that gathers consumer opinions; and its performance on the Newsweek Green Rankings, which assesses the environmental record of large companies.
On the other end of the spectrum are the bottom 10 retailers to work for:
3. Big Lots
4. Foot Locker
4. Abercrombie & Fitch
7. Dollar Tree
8. Ross Stores
9. YUM! Brands
9. Dick's Sporting Goods
In contrast to the top retailer Apple — which ranked high due to excellent customer satisfaction, high employee feedback at Glassdoor and a top 10% score on Newsweek — Dillard's scored in the bottom 10 retailers. Dillard's scored in the bottom quarter of the Newsweek rankings, earned a "dissatisfied" rating from employees at Glassdoor and failed to impress customers in wRatings research.
According the Good Company Retail Index, Walmart, Target, Macy's, Best Buy and Kohl's were among major retailers that fell somewhere between the top 10 and bottom 10 for various reasons. However, according to The New York Times, all five chains opened early on Thanksgiving for Black Friday shopping, dealing a blow to their employees.
Laura Bassi, Ed Frauenheim and Dan are co-authors of the new book Good Company: Business Success in the Worthiness Era.
